Duties:

  • Responds to crime scenes and major traffic accident scenes for evidence collection, provides crime scene security, photographs crime scenes, and operates video equipment at crime scenes.
  • Receives, disposes of, and maintains custody of criminal evidence and unclaimed property.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of computerized and written reports and other correspondence related to crime evidence collection and documentation.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of the crime evidence section. Develops and directs the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the section.
  • Recommends selection of staff and provides for the training and development of staff, recommends and implements disciplinary action as required.
  • Prepares and administers the section’s budget.
  • Provides technical assistance for staff in resolving difficult crime evidence collection and processing problems.
  • Ensures that crime scene evidence collection, coding and processing are performed in conformance with departmental and other legal requirements.
  • Supervises the maintenance of all crime scene evidence and coordinates access and use of evidence in investigations with authorized staff.
  • Maintains current knowledge of crime evidence collection techniques, technology and methods.
  • Prepares and presents crime evidence for court cases.

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
  • Education
    • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade
    • College level courses in Criminal Justice, biology, or a related field is desirable
  • Experience
    • Two years of lead or supervisory experience directing the collection, identification and processing of crime evidence.
Other Requirements: Must be available for 24-hour call back. Must be willing to handle firearms.
