Investigator I/II (Crime Scene Investigation)

Salary: $46,582.00 - $103,818.00 Annually

This is an entry level to full performance professional level position by which the incumbent performs various duties and responsibilities carried out in support the Crime Scene Investigation Division. The incumbent in this position is authorized to carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with established performance standards and is subject to reporting and justifying task outcomes through their chain of command. Work is performed under the supervision of higher level investigators and performance will be evaluated based on accuracy, timeliness, completion of assignments, and compliance with established guidelines and procedures.

Duties:

  • Responds to crime scenes promptly;
  • Completes assignments accurately and within required timeframe;
  • Gathers facts regarding investigations from witnesses, victims and law enforcement officers to identify, process and recover evidence utilizing the best forensic recovery methods;
  • Examines the scene and/or body to determine the cause and manner of death using forensic investigative techniques;
  • Uses proper techniques to collect, maintain, and package items of physical evidence for submission to laboratories and/or court;
  • Collects inked fingerprints and palm prints;
  • Photographs crime scenes and victims;
  • Attends autopsies;
  • Prepares reports detailing actions, examinations, processes utilized, and evidence recovered;
  • Prepares letters of transmittal and laboratory analysis requests for submission to the FBI Laboratory, State Police Laboratory or other laboratories as required;
  • Conducts parallel investigations at other crime scenes;
  • Instructs recruits in the area of evidence collection to ensure proper protocol is being followed;
  • Formulates lesson plans for evidence collection and photographs for the Training and Education Division;
  • Assists with training new employees; and
  • Attends court to present oral testimony.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Law Enforcement, Business/Public Administration, Social Science or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate:
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must work shift work to include (day/evening/midnights), weekends, and holidays.
  • This is an essential position. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
