Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and specialized duties related to crime scene investigation and property and evidence management; identifies, diagrams, photographs, collects, transports and preserves evidence from crime scenes; receives, processes, stores, safeguards, delivers, releases, and disposes of police property, evidence and supplies; maintains an inventory of evidence and property submitted to the department; protects the integrity of evidence through the judicial process; assists investigative staff; gives expert testimony in court; performs additional related duties as assigned.
The Crime Scene/Property Evidence Specialist is a journey level, non-sworn position responsible for highly specialized tasks related to print collection and examination of crime scene evidence, operation of the police evidence room including maintenance of property, evidence, inventory, and chain of custody. Incumbents are required to be fully aware of policies and legal requirements in the handling of crime scene investigations and property and evidence. Incumbents in this class work with a great deal of independence, performing the full range of control with only occasional instruction or assistance as new and unusual situations arise.
