Duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.   • Receives, stores and maintains the chain of custody for Police Department evidence and the safekeeping of property.
  • Reviews property/evidence, invoice/records and receipt forms for property description and accuracy and alerts Police Officers regarding the need to correct forms and comply with Department procedures.
  • Releases evidence to Detectives/ Police Officers/Prosecuting Attorneys for court purposes.
  • Prepares evidence for transport to crime labs and other agencies; processes returned samples.
  • Releases property to owners; may prepare items for auction; maintains records of property and evidence transactions and final disposition; disposes of property and contraband items in accordance with State laws and Department policies and procedures
  • Makes copies of evidence CD/DVD's as requested.
  • Appears in court to testify regarding the chain of evidence.
  • May respond to inquiries from the public and staff regarding property and evidence in the Department's custody.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in case of an emergency.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Complies with and promotes safe practices in agreement with the safety rules and procedures set forth in the Loss Control Program.
  • Performs related work as required
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Proper methods of receipt, issuance and records control of varied materials.
  • Modern office practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computers, spreadsheet and database software programs.
  • Spelling, and grammar.
  • Record keeping and filing procedures.
  • Personal Computer with data entry into Record Management Systems, calculators, telephone, copy and fax machine, and scanner.
SKILL IN:
  • Operation of listed tools and equipment.
ABILITY TO:
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Write and maintain accurate reports.
  • Understand pertinent procedures and functions.
  • Deal with the public and others by telephone and in person.

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet. There may be occasions when the level of odors (of evidence) can be very strong.
  • An individual working this position can expect that the following environmental conditions on occasion will occur in conjunction with the job duties of this position: Depending upon the time of year, working in high temperatures (i.e., moving property from police department to off-site storage area); exposure to hazardous materials such as blood, bodily fluids, explosives, or other possibly hazardous materials; and possible contact with arrestees, persons with criminal backgrounds or irate individuals.

Requirements:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED, and (1) one year prior experience in police or related field; or any combination of education and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
LICENSING & TRAINING:
  • Valid Driver's License prior to employment.
