This is highly responsible professional managerial and administrative work in the Drug Analysis Laboratory. Work involves responsibility for the overall operations of the Drug Analysis Laboratory, to include ensuring laboratory certification, quality control, and general laboratory conditions. The primary responsibilities include supervising, planning, coordinating and continually appraising the activities of professional, paraprofessional and clerical staff to accomplish the department's specific goals and objectives. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through reports and the evaluation of laboratory operations and objectives.

  • Plans, sets and establishes priorities and deadlines for the Drug Analysis Laboratory (DAL);
  • Manages the administrative, business, and technical affairs for DAL;
  • Monitors and reviews all work assignments and laboratory reports for technical soundness;
  • Reviews analytical reports of other chemists to ensure accuracy and precision;
  • Plans and coordinates the operational activities of the DAL;
  • Develops, maintains, and updates the FSD/DAL document management system;
  • Testifies in court as required and confers with and/or advises police and prosecutors on the forensic aspects of cases and the preparation of testimony for court;
  • Audits all DAL operations and practices to verify compliance with standard operating procedures and quality control processes;
  • Develops, maintains, updates, and implements all FSD/DAL operating procedures;
  • Establishes, conducts and supervises the Technical Training Program for DAL;
  • Assist to establish the DAL Quality and Safety Programs;
  • Ensures all personnel receive the training;
  • Coordinates and reviews annual proficiency tests for DAL chemists;
  • Ensures all new methods are validated prior to lab implementation;
  • Audits instrument calibration and maintenance records;
  • Implements all required measures to obtain and maintain accreditation;
  • Reviews use of supplies and makes recommendations for procurement of supplies and equipment; and
  • Tracks the DAL working budget to ensure funds are used appropriately.


  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Forensic Science, Physical Science or other related fields; plus a minimum of three (3) years of responsible professional experience in Forensic Science, which includes at least two (2) years of supervisory and laboratory management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of nine (9) years of relevant education and experience, which includes at least two (2) years of supervisory laboratory management experience will be considered.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate:
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to work day/evening shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • This is an essential position. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
