Under general supervision, learns to perform and performs specialized support work related to the custody, control, and disposition of property and evidence held by the Police Department; receives, inventories, stores, seals, maintains, releases, and destroys all property coming into the possession of the Department; produces evidence for court, attorney's and investigators; performs other related duties as required.
The Property & Evidence Officer I is the entry level class in the Property Evidence Officer series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform the more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework, where there are minimal consequences of error. This classification is alternatively staffed with Property & Evidence Officer II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.
The IPD Property & Evidence Officer II is the journey level class responsible for the operation of the police evidence room including maintenance of property, evidence, inventories, and chain of custody. Incumbents of this class work with a great deal of independence of action, but must follow specific policies and legal requirements in the handling of evidence. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior IPD Property & Evidence Officer in that the latter is a lead manager that has ongoing overall administrative responsibility for the department.
