Forensic Investigator Assistant

Under the direction of Supervisory Forensic Investigator, responds to death scenes, healthcare facilities, and residences throughout Harris County to recover and transport human remains to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (HCIFS).

Duties:

  • Inventories decedent personal property at scenes.
  • Drives transport vehicles to and from scenes/hospitals/etc.
  • Assists in coordinating organ procurement agencies.
  • Checks-in decedents to HCIFS on arrival to morgue.
  • Performs x-rays on decedents as required by pre-autopsy, post-autopsy, anthropology, and other requests.
  • Takes digital fingerprints on decedents on arrival to HCIFS and follows-up with identification as needed (including rebanding of decedents).
  • Performs inventory of decedents prescription medications obtained from scene, healthcare facility, or residence.
  • Answers main investigations line and triage phone calls and notification of death calls.
  • Assists funeral homes with death certificate information via telephone.
  • Completes death inquests with assistance of Forensic Investigators.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Supervisory Forensic Investigator and/or Director of Forensic Investigations Manager.

Requirements:

  • Associates degree or 60 hours of college education from an accredited college or university.
  • Oral (specifically via telephone) and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Natural ambulation and manual dexterity are required due to the essential physical demands of manipulating bodies as part of the investigation and in loading/unloading bodies. This also includes:
  • Physical strength to move and manipulate decedents weighing 200 pounds and over from the scene of death or healthcare facility, in and out of transport vehicles, and from stretcher to morgue trays using acceptable techniques.
  • A valid driver's license (Texas within two weeks of employment).
  • This is a night shift position with weekends and holidays required.
Preferences
  • Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field.
  • Previous experience with patient transport, decedent transport, or other related experience.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, radiograph equipment.
  • Basic computer, word processing and other computer programs skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desired.
