Forensic Chemist I/II (DNA)

Salary: $50,598.00 - $112,768.00 Annually

This is an entry level to full performance technical and professional position in the field of Forensic DNA Analysis. Incumbents are assigned to the DNA Laboratory where they conduct serologic and DNA analysis on physical evidence submitted by law enforcement personnel. This analytical work involves potential contact with biohazards, chemical solvents and reagents. The employee prepares summary findings and materials used to testify as an expert witness in court. Routine work assignments are performed under close supervision of a higher level Forensic Chemist, and is evaluated based upon their ability to analyze, identify, document evidence, and offer effective case related testimony at criminal trial proceedings.

  • Conducts serologic analysis on physical evidence to identify body fluids;
  • Performs DNA analysis on evidence according to established protocols and documents all steps in case files;
  • Writes reports on findings and conclusions;
  • Maintains chain of custody and responsibility for all the evidence assigned;
  • Submits work related documentation for peer review;
  • Prepares summary findings;
  • Testifies as an expert witness in court;
  • Performs routine maintenance, quality checks of reagents, and calibration of laboratory equipment;
  • Performs scientific validation of systems (technical, administrative and equipment) that are used in DNA analysis;
  • Takes and passes forensic DNA analysis proficiency tests twice a year;
  • Attends continuing education courses relevant to forensic DNA analysis; and
  • Enters analytical data into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and performs other related duties.


  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Forensic Science or other Physical Science including course work totaling twelve (12) semester credit hours in the following subject areas: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Population Genetics or Statistics
  • Experience with Real Time PCR and the 3500 genetic analyzer, and CODIS data entry desired.
  • Experience in forensic DNA laboratory work applying knowledge of forensic serology, human DNA purification, quantitation, PCR, STR's and associated instrumentation required.
