Salary: $3,432.00 - $4,492.00 Monthly

The primary responsibility of these positions is to provide maintenance, administrative support and quality assurance to the DNA section of their assigned laboratory.

THIS RECRUITMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL THREE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN POSITIONS IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS:
  • CODIS Laboratory (Seattle)
  • Tacoma Crime Laboratory
  • Vancouver Crime Laboratory

Duties:

  • Participate in quality assurance processes as required for accreditation and by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) DNA Quality Assurance Standards.
  • Prepare reagents and assist in maintaining chemical inventories.
  • Perform and document quality control checks of critical reagents and supplies.
  • Perform and appropriately document DNA extraction, quantizations, amplification, capillary electrophoresis (CE) detection, and data analysis of non-probative reference materials.
  • Maintain a clean laboratory environment, prevent contamination, and ensure laboratory safety.
  • Perform and document instrument and equipment maintenance, performance checks, sensitivity monitoring, and calibration schedules.
  • Participate in and document temperature monitoring processes, including unit maintenance and periodic National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) calibration checks.
  • Order supplies and monitor inventory.
  • Perform electronic data backup and archival.
  • Coordinate biohazard waste disposal.
  • Conduct safety checks (eye wash, fire extinguishers, showers, first aid kits, fume hoods).

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree or higher in biology, chemistry, lab technology, micro or molecular biology.
  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory tools such as pipettes and balances.
  • Understand and practice the principles of laboratory safety.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills necessary for word processing, data entry, data management/analysis and imaging.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted Washington State driver's license.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the state for meetings, training and providing assistance as required.
  • Must be willing to provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Understand, operate and maintain scientific instruments and equipment.
  • Demonstrate skills specific to a DNA laboratory: Excellent lab skills to prevent contamination. Very well organized. Maintains accurate and complex documentation. A high attention to detail. Good computer and math skills. Good manual dexterity/ability to manipulate small tubes.
  • Ability to provide recommendations and apply process improvement approaches.
  • Ability to maintain strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong customer service skills.
  • Willing to work as a team member using non-defensive communication skills, and provide input into team functions and products.
  • Willing to adapt to changing business needs, conditions and work responsibilities.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation in assigned duties and in personal career development.
Willing to work with or without close supervision, accept appropriate direction and follow the chain of command.
