Fingerprint Identification Specialist 1

This is limited performance technical fingerprint identification and classification work on a rotating shift. Employees in this class both manually identify and operate an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)/Multimodal Biometric Identification System (MBIS) workstation to match unidentified fingerprints against law enforcement databases using fingerprint expertise. Work includes classifying, identifying and rolling fingerprints of prisoners and others. This class is differentiated from higher-level classes by the variety and complexity of assignments and the degree of technical guidance required. Employees develop skills in dealing with difficult fingerprint classification problems. Work is performed under the supervision of a Fingerprint Identification Supervisor.

Requirements: The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.

  • EDUCATION: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
  • AND
  • EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of full-time experience in a public jurisdiction law enforcement setting where the primary duties include taking, classifying and comparing fingerprints using the Henry and the NCIC classification systems.


  • EDUCATION: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
  • AND
  • CERTIFICATION: Completion of a training program consisting of a minimum forty (40) hours of instruction in fingerprinting, resulting in a certificate issued by a recognized law enforcement agency or institution (i.e., Dept. of Justice, FBI, etc.) or a recognized professional institute (i.e., Ron Smith & Associates, Sirchie Inc.).

NOTE: Candidates must submit a copy of their certification.

Physical & Medical Requirements
  • Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Required Licenses & Certifications
  • Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment as a Fingerprint Identification Specialist 1.
  • Must be able to pass a local, state and national criminal background check prior to appointment including a fingerprint-based check as required by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Security Policy.
