Automated Fingerprint Identification System Operations Supervisor

Supervises the activities involving fingerprint classification work of the Sheriff's Department's Fingerprint Identification Unit and the Automated Identification System.

Positions allocable to this class are responsible for supervising, training and evaluating a team of Automated Fingerprint Identification System Technicians and clerical support staff in the operation of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System. These positions function at the first level of supervision and must exercise a broad knowledge of personnel practices, supervisory principles and departmental policies, procedures and services to ensure the effective performance of subordinates.

  • Assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of Automated Fingerprint Identification System Technicians of assigned shift.
  • Supervises the filing of automated and manual fingerprint files, ensuring accuracy and procedural uniformity.
  • Supervises and may participate in searching the computerized data bank, manuals and micrographic records involved with fingerprint identification.
  • Assists in making final determinations regarding questionable or difficult fingerprint patterns or automated system on line verifications using analysis, comparison, evaluation, and verification.
  • Reviews work of subordinates for adherence to established work standards, procedures and policies.
  • Trains and monitors the preparation and quality control of latent tenprints for entry into the regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
  • Coordinates the Sheriff's Department's tenprint identification services and the exchange of fingerprint classification information with other law enforcement and governmental agencies to assist in criminal investigations and other multi-agency projects.
  • Maintains work production and flow, develops procedures and establishes deadlines, makes job assignments and adjusts priorities in accordance with such determinations.
  • Prepares performance evaluations and appraisals of promotability, arranges work schedules, vacations and time off for their subordinate personnel.
  • Provides court testimony for verification of fingerprint identification and/or methods used to determine identification, as required.


  • Two years experience at the level of County of Los Angeles class of Automated Fingerprint Indentification System Technician II.*
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Physical Class II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
  • * In County service, experience at the level of Automated Fingerprint Identification System Technician II refers to searching, registering, digital verification of tenprints, manual classification, coding and maintaining Master fingerprint records.
