  • Recover and process property and evidence in support of criminal investigations
  • Respond to crime scenes, accidents and other incidents to identify and recover evidence
  • Prepare timely and accurate reports in relation to crime scenes while complying to chain of evidence rules and requirements
  • Routinely assist with the maintenance of the Police Laboratory and Property storage area
  • Process lab requests including digital records for prosecutions and defense counsel
  • Assist in providing training and education within the Police Department in relation to evidence identification and collection, including latent processing, DNA collection and photography of crime scenes
  • Assist in photographing special events for the City and provide educational presentations to the community


The knowledge and skills required to be successful in this position are
  • Completion of an Associates Degree or equivalent from an accredited community college or university with coursework in forensic science, criminal justice, or related field.
  • One year of experience in one of the disciplines of forensic science, latent print examination or crime scene investigation is preferred.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license with a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the City’s insurance carrier is required.
  • Other useful knowledge for this position includes: proper chain of evidence and security requirements, practices of evidence collection, processing and storage; photographic methods and equipment related to crime scene investigations and inventory system tracking.
  • Having clear communication skills, strong organizational skills and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships are important skills needed in this position.
Candidates must also have the ability to:
  • Use and operate computers
  • Analyze and compile statistical data and prepare reports
  • Use independent judgment and identify options and alternatives
  • Make sound decisions that facilitate the integrity and security of the property and evidence function
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

  • Work safely without presenting a threat to self or others
  • Perform a variety of sedentary to moderate physical work depending upon assignment, including moving around on job sites, which may require the full range of physical motion including pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking, standing; and occasional lifting and carrying of supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Hazards may include personal contact with persons related to the job function.
  • May be subject to contact with articles that require universal precautions as related to infectious disease.
  • Contact with chemicals and weapons, in a variety of settings from the office, to the street, to burned or exploded buildings and/or to scenes of criminal activity.
  • Job requires physical effort requiring lifting of objects of a significant amount of weight.
  • This position may involve working a variety of schedules, including evenings and weekends and is subject to work beyond normal scheduled hours including emergency call in resulting from being called out for crime scene investigations. Work schedules can be changed with little or no notice and mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notification.
