Duties:

  • Performs liquid-liquid and solid phase extractions for screening and confirmation testing.
  • Operates headspace GC/FID, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS and/or LC/TOF MS instrumentation.
  • Processes and reviews instrumental data, prepares calibration curves and identifies/quantifies target drugs in control and specimen chromatograms.
  • Performs screening tests including ELISA, CO-oximetry, and chemistries.
  • Reports results supported by analytical findings.
  • Performs batch review and case review.
  • May perform expert review of casework.
  • Performs and documents routine maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repair of analytical devices and instrumentation.
  • Receives, inventories and properly stores toxicological evidence; maintains accurate chain of custody records from evidence receipt to final disposition.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents and maintains supplies in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Performs routine laboratory upkeep duties such as cleaning glassware, discarding biohazard trash, organizing laboratory work and storage areas, and maintaining laboratory cleanliness.
  • Performs quality assurance/quality control procedures on reagents, equipment and instruments as necessary.
  • Participates in training, competency testing and proficiency testing according to established protocols.
  • Performs and documents casework duties in accordance with laboratory procedures with minimal errors and no pattern of deficiencies.
  • Assists in ensuring conformance to laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Maintains professional certification and licensure.
  • Attends continuing education/training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and professional meetings as time and resources allow.
  • Follows rigorously all safety manuals, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance/quality control protocols.
  • Keeps management abreast of information critical to the proper planning and coordination of laboratory operation and communicates with other lab personnel.
  • Provides expert testimony in a court of law when subpoenaed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory management.
  • Routine Contacts: District attorneys, law enforcement officers and defense attorneys regarding evidence and test procedures when subpoenaed to testify; educators and peers during professional training or participation in accreditation visits

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology, toxicology or a closely related field from an accredited university and meet the Toxicology Analyst (General, Non-interpretive) coursework requirements outlined in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 37, Part 15, Chapter 651, Subchapter C, Rule ยง651.207. https://bit.ly/2OQ83O4
  • If the analyst will perform expert review, he/she must also meet the Toxicology Analyst (Interpretive) coursework requirements.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a clinical or forensic toxicology laboratory.
  • Knowledge of the basic theoretical principles and applications of instrumentation (immunoassay, UV-visible spectrophotometry, headspace GC/FID, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS and/or LC/TOF MS).
  • Methodologies used to analyze toxicological samples.
  • Experience operating and maintaining instrumentation listed above.
NOTE
  • The hiring manager has the discretion to allow the substitution of up to two years of work experience for master's or doctoral degrees, depending on the nature of the degree, research performed, and the relevance to the principal tasks described below underneath job descriptions.
Additional Requirements
  • Membership in a relevant professional organization within one year from the date of hire.
  • Certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) within three years from date of hire or eligibility, whichever is later, to be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • This position also requires appropriate licensure by the Texas Forensic Science Commission; licensure must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move and lift objects not heavier than 45 pounds.
Preferences
  • Completion of a documented training program in forensic toxicology; courtroom testimony experience.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with ChemStation, MassHunter and/or Analyst data processing software and JusticeTrax LIMS strongly desired.
