Current vacancy with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department located in Visalia. This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies in Tulare County. The expected life of this list is six months.

  • Process crime scenes for physical evidence, including collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Assumes responsibility for integrity of the crime scene in absence of a supervisor.
  • Manual comparison of latent print impressions with known finger and palm prints.
  • Evaluates latent print impressions collected as evidence.
  • Testifies as an expert witness in fingerprint identification.
  • Provides technical photography of crime scenes and autopsies.
  • Assists investigators in preparing photographic line ups.
  • Provides training in evidence processing for Sheriff Personnel.
  • Process property for physical evidence.
  • Provides expert court testimony as lab tests are performed or comparisons made on evidence.
  • Assists in criminal case investigations.
  • Photograph and diagram crime scenes.
  • May be subject to call-out, or be placed on stand-by.


Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

Knowledge of:
  • Crime scene evidence, processing and preservation, principles and techniques of collection.
  • Basic photography techniques.
  • Techniques of fingerprinting and latent print processing.
Skill/Ability to:
  • Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
  • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
  • Interpret laws, ordinances, policies and procedures.
  • Compose and write clear and accurate reports for evaluation and criminal prosecution.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Operate radio equipment, emergency vehicles and video equipment.
  • Work independently.
  • Operate computer terminal, utilizing word processing and other software programs.
  • Associate's degree or completion of 60 college units in criminal justice or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of an International Association for Identification (IAI) or equivalent certification in Shoe Tracks and Fingerprints.
  • Applicant should possess a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
  • Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • A background investigation will be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions.
  • An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions.
  • Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
