Crime Scene Technician

This position is responsible for the collection and processing of evidence at crime scenes, and in a laboratory environment. This position also deals with the collection and processing of fingerprint evidence using various techniques and computer systems.

  • Responds to crime scene; directs officers as required to peruse scene, accumulate evidence, and evaluates the incident; receives initial report from Police Officer; takes measures to secure and protect crime scene upon arrival.
  • Examines and scrutinizes crime scene; coordinates activities; briefs supervisors and other investigators as needed.
  • Interviews witnesses, victims, and others for facts and information about the case for the purpose of making drawings/sketches of crime scenes.
  • Processes scene for fingerprints or other evidence to identify suspects and motive for crime; documents information in writing and by photographing and/or videotaping scene; measures distances and prepares layout sketches of crime scene.
  • Identifies and collects evidence utilizing chemicals, power tools, mechanics tools, or by other means; makes plaster cast of shoe and tire impressions; vacuums for hair, fiber, and other trace evidence.
  • Accompanies and assists investigators with search warrants for documentation and evidence collection and with conducting various phases of criminal investigations.
  • Collects, handles and secures samples of blood and various other body fluids as evidence; performs blood pattern analysis; determines trajectory of bullets.
  • Packages, labels, and preserves physical evidence found; maintains evidentiary chain of custody to ensure integrity and admissibility of evidence.
  • Attends autopsies to obtain evidence or information on the cause of death of victims; obtains crime lab analysis of evidence to support case.
  • Serves in an On-Call capacity as directed by supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as directed by supervisors.


Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Must complete coursework required to obtain P.O.S.T. certification as a Crime Scene Technician, and other specialized related courses at the Department's discretion.
  • Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of office administration.
  • Knowledge of basic applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to learn crime scene processing techniques and practices.
  • Ability to apply basic laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive. Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
