Salary: $28,097.00 - $47,765.00 Annually

Duties:

  • Collect evidence at crime scenes or related areas using technical processes to find, collect, store, catalog, and transport.
  • Perform related duties such as fingerprinting, maintaining chemical supplies, and technical equipment.
  • Log in film and evidence.
  • Attend in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
  • Thoroughly and accurately record and document actions.
  • Gain knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, operations and documentation systems.
  • Successfully complete the following coursework or equivalent training: Evidence Handling and Crime Scene Search; Basic Crime Scene Photography; Bloodstain Workshop; FBI Latent Print Processing Techniques; Impression Evidence.
  • Operate Crime Scene Unit vehicles.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Perform duties under the direct supervision of the sworn officer in the unit or his/her designee who will serve as a trainer to provide the necessary guidance and instruction.
  • Requires considerable contact with citizens and personnel from other city departments and related agencies.
  • Requires working beyond a standard 40 hour workweek to include on call, evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.
  • Requires working in all weather conditions often under unpleasant circumstances.
  • Must travel extensively to crime scenes throughout the City.
  • This is a non-exempt position.

Requirements:

Typical Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Forensic Science, Police Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related field.
  • Experience or knowledge in police investigative work and photography highly desirable.
  • Ability to: see issues within the broader context; apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions gather and analyze evidence; take, develop, print and enlarge color film; lift heavy objects, communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skills required: analytical, problem solving, public relations, deductive and intuitive reasoning and research skills. Must be detailed oriented, flexible, focused on both process and outcome, and effective in garnering assistance as needed.
Other requirements include:
  • Successfully completing a Police Division comprehension background investigation to include polygraph examination; possessing a valid State of Virginia driver's license; having a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
