Fingerprint Technician 1

San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Sheriff's Department, San Francisco, California

Salary: $57,486.00 - $69,862.00 per year

Under general supervision, the Fingerprint Technician I performs fingerprint comparisons and verifications using SFPD ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System), takes fingerprints using the Live Scan System, inked impressions, and photographs using Digital Mug Shot System and performs other related duties as required. Essential functions of the job are: comparing, analyzing, and verifying fingerprints, making identifications, fingerprinting prisoners and other individuals; taking palm prints; obtaining information from prisoners and other individuals; data entry of demographic and other vital information; classifying fingerprints; searching fingerprints and palm prints; assigning Identification numbers; taking photographs of prisoners and other individuals; conduct warrant and criminal history inquires of individuals fingerprinted and photographed on local, state and national databases; transmitting fingerprint and other identification information to Department of Justice and FBI; reviewing incoming data sheets; interacting with other law enforcement agencies; and typing correspondence and other relevant forms.

Duties:

Positions located at the Police Department:
  • Compares new fingerprint submissions to existing fingerprint records for the purpose of making Identifications and maintaining accurate criminal history records of arrest.
  • Fingerprints, Palm prints and Photographs prisoners and other individuals using Live Scan system, cameras and/or inked impression for identification, comparison and record keeping purposes.
  • Obtain demographic and vital statistics information from prisoners and other individuals. i.e., name, address, height, weight, date of birth, place of birth and identifying marks.
  • Conducts data entry of demographic and other relevant information by entering the information into multiple computer databases and/or log sheets.
  • Searches, Compares and Verifies fingerprints, palm prints and photographs using SFPD Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) for comparison and identification purposes.
  • Verifies the appropriate Identification number assigned by the ABIS for establishing unique identification and record keeping.
  • Reviews and verifies incoming CII and FBI "rap sheets" from Federal and State law enforcement agencies for duplicate Identification numbers.
  • Identifies fingerprints in compliance with the fingerprint industry standard and methodology.
  • Fingerprints and photograph public subjects required to register with the local law enforcement agency annually or as required by law.
  • Takes photographs of Police Department personnel using digital mug shot system for identification and record keeping purposes.
  • Conduct warrant and criminal history inquiries in local, state, and national databases of fingerprinted individuals.
  • Transmits fingerprint and other identification information to the Department of Justice for criminal identification purpose.
  • Searches, Compares and Verifies fingerprint information forwarded from the Chief Medical Examiner office to identify the decedents and to determine if the person is known within the criminal justice system.
  • Interacts with other law enforcement agencies and the public to exchange fingerprint and other relevant identification information.
  • Retrieves fingerprint and other relevant information from Identification Unit files or computer databases for authorized individuals and agencies.
  • Routinely reviews and analyzes fingerprint and other Identification Unit files to update records.
  • Professionally answers questions from the Identification Unit public window and by phone.
  • Types correspondence and forms using computer or typewriter.
  • May be required to drive.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Positions located at the Sheriff’s Department:
  • Fingerprints, Palm prints and Photographs prisoners and other individuals using Live Scan system, cameras and/or inked impression for identification, comparison and record keeping purposes.
  • Obtain demographic and vital statistics information from prisoners and other individuals. i.e., name, address, height, weight, date of birth, place of birth and identifying marks.
  • Conducts data entry of demographic and other relevant information by entering the information into multiple computer databases and/or log sheets
  • Reviews and verifies incoming CII and FBI Live Scan returns from Federal and State law enforcement agencies for duplicate Identification numbers.
  • Professionally Interacts with SFPD Identification Unit in the exchange of identification information.
  • Types correspondence and forms using computer or typewriter.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
  • The Fingerprint Identification Unit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fingerprint Technicians I’s work schedules include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Fingerprint Technician I’s work 8-hour or 10-hours shifts or longer and must be willing and able to respond, report and mobilize as necessary.
