The Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1937 in an effort to provide for the better enforcement of the criminal laws in Wake County. CCBI is a specialized fingerprint identification bureau that functions as an independent criminal justice agency serving all law enforcement agencies having jurisdiction in Wake County. CCBI's mission is to continuously strive for perfection while setting the highest standards in crime scene investigation, forensic analysis of evidence, and collection of criminal arrest information. CCBI is comprised of approximately 80 full-time employees divided into three divisions: the Investigations Division, the Crime Laboratory Division, and the Support Services Division. The Investigations Division's responsibility is to provide crime scene investigation services to law enforcement agencies within Wake County. The Crime Laboratory Division is responsible for the forensic analysis of evidence including latent print examination services, controlled substance analysis, DWI blood drug/alcohol analysis, digital evidence examination, photographic services, and facial recognition examinations. The Support Services Division is divided into a Civil Identification Unit and a Criminal Identification Unit. The Civil Identification Unit is tasked with fingerprinting for concealed handgun permits, sexual offender registration, and applicants seeking employment. The Criminal Identification Unit is responsible for the identity verification, collection of fingerprints and photographs, and the collection of statutorily required DNA collection kits upon all individuals arrested in Wake County for offenses authorizing such collections.   • Investigate crime scenes located or initiated within Wake County‚Äôs jurisdictional area
  • Interview officers, witnesses, and/or victims
  • Determine the scope of investigation and methods to be utilized in gathering evidence
  • Gather and maintain custody of physical evidence for scientific evaluation and court display
  • Process and test evidence in the lab using a variety of chemicals and equipment
  • Prepare detailed reports regarding observation and activities
  • Testify as an expert witness in court


  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, natural/forensic science, or related field.
  • A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record.
  • IAI crime scene certification required within 2 years of eligibility or employment. Must maintain current certification thereafter.
Preferred Qualification
  • A degree in a forensic or natural science-based related field.
  • Full-time employment experience conducting crime scene investigations within the past 5 years.
  • IAI crime scene certification.

  • Ability to use documentation tools, computer software, and evidence processing equipment
  • A criminal background check and credit check will be conducted.
  • Applicants must successfully pass a reading comprehension and language skills test, a pre-employment polygraph, a psychological fitness for duty examination, and a pre-employment drug test.
