Forensic Scientist - DNA Sexual Assault Kit

Salary: Depends on Qualifications

  • Forensic Scientist 3 - Range 66: $5,574 - $7,316 per month
  • Forensic Scientist 2 - Range 56: $4,361 - $5,715 per month
  • Forensic Scientist 1 - Range 50: $3,758 - $4,929 per month

This recruitment will be used to fill several new positions with the DNA High Throughput Lab in Vancouver and will remain open until all positions have been filled. Candidate evaluation will be ongoing. It will be to the applicant's advantage to submit application materials as soon as possible.

These positions perform independent analysis of sexual assault kits in the High Throughput unit of the Vancouver Crime Laboratory, and includes complex DNA casework for criminal justice agencies, interpreting analytical results, and preparing writing opinion reports and testifying as an expert witness in courts of law.

Duties:

  • Perform laboratory analysis of physical evidence in complex DNA casework using accepted scientific methods.
  • Document and protect evidence according to current laboratory procedures.
  • Examine and analyze evidence for the presence of biological material in criminal cases.
  • Write reports based on the interpretation of observations and analytical test results.
  • Participate in quality assurance processes.
  • Testify as an expert witness in a court of law.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in forensic science, natural science, or closely related field. Examples of related fields, including but not limited to, are: genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, medical technology, analytical chemistry, clinical chemistry, nuclear chemistry, or toxicology.
  • College chemistry coursework (20 semester hours or 30 quarter hours). College coursework in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours combined) as well as college coursework in statistics or population genetics. Coursework must have been successfully completed with passing grades.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
Additional Required Qualifications for the levels listed below:
  • Forensic Scientist 2: One year of technical experience in a forensic laboratory performing analysis of physical evidence.
  • Forensic Scientist 3: Three years of technical experience in a forensic laboratory performing analysis of physical evidence, which includes testifying as an expert witness in courts of law.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Physics coursework (5 semester or 8 quarter hours).
