Forensics Evidence Technician

Salary: $34,623.26 - $39,816.75 Annually

  • Works in stressful, high-risk situations.
  • Administers first-aid to the injured in emergency cases; safeguards against exposure to blood borne pathogens from accident victims, crime victims and suspects.
  • Works on an on-call 24-hour basis, is subject to deployment into the field during emergency incidents or crises.
  • Maintains the required level of proficiency in the proper use of firearms and evasive action/driving skills and maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars; participates in physical fitness activities.
  • Operates and maintains County vehicle and two-way radio.
  • Responds to crime scenes for the collection and documentation of evidence.
  • Documents the receipt of items of evidence collected by officers; inventory and log all items; mark and store all evidence in an orderly manner for quick retrieval.
  • Documents the receipt and storage of money, narcotics, and other items of a sensitive nature in an appropriate manner to ensure their security.
  • Maintains files and records regarding the disposition of property; ensures proper inventory, logging and disposition procedures are followed in accordance to established guidelines.
  • Testifies in court to the chain of custody of evidence.
  • Answers citizen inquiries over the telephone and in person regarding property/evidence and assists them in identifying and claiming property.
  • Transports property from various locations to the Forensic Services Office.
  • Maintains files and records for evidence and computerized records.
  • Prepares items for auction.
  • Transports evidence to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Forensic Laboratory.
  • Assists Forensic Technicians with related duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • One (1) year of general work experience;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record; must pass all required tests and must be able to operate standard issue vehicles.
Special Requirements:
  • Must obtain the required S.C. Criminal Justice Academy LE-3 certification within one (1) year of employment;
  • Must be able to maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms;
  • Departmental testing will be administered during interview;
  • Initial testing consists of extensive background check, Nelson Denny and then a polygraph test;
  • Upon successful completion of those tests, selected candidates will then proceed to the physical agility testing with an interview to follow;
  • Post offer drug testing, psychological exam, pre-placement physical and a functional evaluation capacity test will be required;
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing;
  • This position is considered emergency essential and will be required to report to work during any declared emergency situation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of using personal computers.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State laws and County ordinances.
  • Knowledge of police property and evidence receipt, storage, transport and release procedures.
  • Ability to maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to act quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to render accurate oral or written reports of incidents and violations of the law.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of direct supervision.
Physical Demands
  • This position requires the employee to sit and stand; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, finger, grasp objects such as weapons, handcuffs, etc.; reach, pull and push with hands and arms; balance, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel and bend; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds and move one hundred fifty (150) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions
  • The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Twelve (12) hour work schedule on assigned shift. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
