Forensic Computer Analyst

Mesa County Sheriff's Office, Grand Junction, Colorado

Salary: $48,325.40 - $55,574.21 Annually

Uses the application of computer science and investigative procedures to identify, preserve, recover, and analyze digital evidence from computer systems, digital devices, and electronic storage media. This is a non-sworn position.

  • Conduct computer and mobile device forensic examinations, including preservation, acquisition, and analysis of digital evidence.
  • Have a broad understanding of forensic equipment, forensic platforms, and open source tools.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on technical matters relating to digital evidence and testify in court or at hearings as an expert witness in all aspects of electronic evidence.
  • Prepare complex scientific reports, demonstrations, and complex technology related testimony in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of chain of custody and industry best practices related to evidence handling.
  • Maintain an updated digital forensic lab which includes equipment maintenance and software upgrades.
  • Analyze complex law enforcement problems with technological ties and develop strategies of investigation.
  • Attend training to maintain competency and remain current with evolving technologies.
  • Prioritize work based upon urgency, sensitivity, and case magnitude.
  • Ability to work with and take direction from the Lead Forensic Investigator.
  • Strong grasp of technical infrastructure including PC hardware, operating systems, network security and system logs, and mobile devices.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and written communications must be clear and effective.
  • Efficient multi-tasking abilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer/Digital Forensics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain professional certification and training such as CFCE, BCERT, SCERS, ACE, MCFE, CCO, or/and CCPA.
  • This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Work is generally confined to a standard office environment, with occasional field work required.
