This is advance support work of a technical nature that is unique to the law enforcement environment. Work is performed within the framework of established policies, procedures, and priorities. General direction is received from a supervisor. Note: This position is temporary for 3 years from date of employment and is ineligible for benefits, retirement participation and general pay adjustments or merit increases.

  • Responds to police officer and public requests for information.
  • Gathers and compiles statistical data; composes routine correspondence.
  • May perform routine specialized investigative work, within the framework of established guidelines, which will include conducting interviews, composing written reports, and making recommendations.
  • Process physical evidence associated with firearms cases.
  • Perform basic research skills to gather data from a variety of sources.
  • Must be able to pass C-Post State Qualifying Firearms Course
  • Process Physical data associated with firearms cases, using IBIS-NIBN (Integrated Ballistic Information Systems and National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) Imaging techniques.
  • Assist and be able to interact in a law enforcement environment and in preparing scientific documentation and laboratory reports that are based on rough drafts or verbal instructions.
  • Responsible for checking the accuracy of submitted reports from the field and submitting information to the State of Kansas, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms after processing.
  • May work with others in support activities related to interdepartmental and interagency liaison work, tracking and ensuring custody of physical evidence and information processing.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements of Work
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement and firearm laws.
  • Ability to quickly develop a thorough knowledge of the Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances relevant to the area of assignment.
  • Some knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations and the ability to access, interpret, and record information using a video display terminal and electronic keyboard.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to testify in depositions, local, state and federal court proceedings.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of outside agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Cleans and maintains firearms and examination related equipment, such as bullets/casings recovery tank, range, and tools.
  • May require the ability to acquire certification as a law enforcement officer by the State of Kansas.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • A combination of experience and education which includes: 4 years of experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer or a degree from a four-year college in Criminal Justice, Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or a related hard-science; or 6 years of experience as a law enforcement officer plus 60 hours of college which includes 27 hours in police science.
  • At least one year of law enforcement work experience as a supervisor, evidence technician and/or firearm experience to include NRA certifications or any other training and experience that demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the safe handling of firearms are preferred.
  • Must process a valid state issued driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass the ATF IBIS Brasstrax Training Course.
  • Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
