One vacancy exists in the Crime Scene Investigation Section of the Fresno Police Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Crime Scene Technician I is an entry level class which processes crime scenes, takes photographs and collects and preserves evidence used in the identification and prosecution of criminals. Successful candidates must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions and be capable of working in intense and graphic conditions that may occur at crime scenes. Incumbents will be assigned to work a ten hour shift including nights, weekends and holidays. A Crime Scene Technician I, after one year of experience with the City and upon recommendation of the supervisor, may be promoted to a Crime Scene Technician II. The current salary range for Crime Scene Technician II is $4255-$5127/mo.


Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.
  • Completion of thirty (30) college units from an accredited college or university, which includes fifteen (15) semester units within the fields of criminal justice or law enforcement; OR one (1) year of experience with a law enforcement crime lab or identification unit which included processing crime scenes, taking photographs and collecting and preserving evidence.
  • If qualifying with education, a copy of degree or college transcripts must be uploaded and included in your on-line application for verification of requirement. Applicants lacking the documentation may be rejected.
  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
  • The selected eligibles certified for consideration for this position will be required to successfully pass a Department interview, polygraph exam, Department of Justice fingerprint, and an extensive background investigation prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Selection Process

The selection process may consist of the following:
  • Written Examination - 100%: A job-related written examination will be administered which may test a candidate's knowledge of latent print comparison methods and practices, ability to develop and lift latent fingerprints, obtain evidence, acquire skill in taking photographs and establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the performance of assigned duties.
  • The written examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week of: June 10, 2019.
  • Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Written Examination to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
