Coroner's Investigator - Part Time

Chester County Coroner, West Chester, Pennsylvania

Salary: $19.41 Hourly

The Coroner's Investigator will assist with the daily operations of the Coroner's office for both Administrative and Operations functions of the office.

Duties:

  • Act in place of the Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner as needed and directed when both are not available.
  • Investigate and complete reports as necessary for cases and investigations assigned to include scene investigations, phone investigations and death notifications including interviews, securing of records and collection of evidence.
  • Assist in following up investigations for Deputies, including finalizing cases and death certificates.
  • Provide back-up support for office staff to include competency of all office procedures.
  • Review and oversee the monthly department schedule including distribution, filling of open shifts and entry into the Emergency Services program.
  • Assist in reviewing investigators' reports when directed, issuance of cremation authorizations, letters of lateness and evidence/records request forms.
  • Assist with liaison duties as assigned to the County hospitals, Extended Care Facilities, Hospice Units and Funeral Homes for training, and death certificates or investigation issues.
  • Determine training needs and establish training as necessary for the staff and outside agencies.
  • Assist in determining the needs for staffing and assist with filling, providing training, and mentoring, as necessary.
  • Testify in criminal and civil proceedings.
  • Assist in obtaining and maintaining the National Accreditation of the Coroner's Office.
  • Facilitate and/or provide transportation of human remains, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and office functions as determined and assigned by the Coroner or Chief Deputy Coroner.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in a medical, pre-hospital, law enforcement, or public health setting.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as an investigator through the Pennsylvania Coroner's Education Board within 18 months of start of employment and approved National certification program within the first 30 months of employment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • This position may require a general understanding of human resource guidelines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels of county government.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Nursing, Paramedic, Fire Services or equivalent experience in law enforcement, medical field or fire services.
  • Experience as a Deputy Coroner, Medicolegal Death Investigator.
  • ABMDI certification
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of County policies and procedures.
  • Excellent ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
  • Accurate and detail-oriented.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
  • Basic to Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Basic to Intermediate Word skills
  • Basic to Intermediate Excel skills

  • Strong knowledge of Forensic Filer
  • PeopleSoft Financial and PeopleSoft Human Resources skills or the ability to learn PeopleSoft
  • Intermediate Microsoft Outlook skills
  • Basic skills to use the Internet for research purposes
