The Toxicologist II reports to the Deputy Chief Toxicologist or Chief Toxicologist and is responsible for operating headspace GC/FID, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS and/or LC/TOF MS instrumentation.

Duties:

  • Processes and reviews instrumental data, prepares calibration curves and identifies/quantifies target drugs in control and specimen chromatograms.
  • Reports results supported by analytical findings.
  • Performs batch and case review to ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and accreditation standards.
  • May perform expert review of casework.
  • Performs and documents routine maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repair of analytical devices and instrumentation.
  • Conducts ethanol and volatile testing on toxicological evidence submitted by medical examiners and law enforcement agencies.
  • Performs screening tests including ELISA, CO-oximetry, and chemistries.
  • Performs liquid-liquid and solid phase extractions for screening and confirmation testing.
  • Receives, inventories and properly stores toxicological evidence; maintains accurate chain of custody records from evidence receipt to final disposition.
  • Performs and documents casework duties in accordance with laboratory procedures with minimal errors and no pattern of deficiencies.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents and maintains supplies in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Performs quality assurance/quality control procedures on reagents, equipment and instruments as necessary.
  • Provides expert testimony in a court of law when subpoenaed.
  • Assists in ensuring conformance to laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Keeps management abreast of information critical to the proper planning and coordination of laboratory operation and communicates with other lab personnel.
  • Participates in training, competency testing and proficiency testing according to established protocols.
  • Maintains professional certification and licensure.
  • Attends continuing education/ training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and professional meetings as time and resources allow.
  • Follows rigorously all safety manuals, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance/quality control protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned by laboratory management.
  • Routine External Contacts:
    • Forensic pathologists, district attorneys, law enforcement officers and defense attorneys regarding evidence, procedures and test results.
    • Educators and peers during professional training or accreditation visits.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology or a closely related field from an accredited university and meet the Toxicology Analyst (General, Non-interpretive) coursework requirements outlined in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 37, Part 15, Chapter 651, Subchapter C, Rule 651.207. PLUS
  • Five (5) years of experience in a clinical or forensic toxicology laboratory.
  • Substitution of up to two (2) years of work experience for master's or doctoral degrees, depending on the nature of the degree, research performed, and the relevance to the principal tasks.
  • Knowledge of the basic theoretical principles and applications of instrumentation (immunoassay, UV-visible spectrophotometry, headspace GC/FID, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS and/or LC/TOF MS) and methodologies used to analyze toxicological samples.
  • Experience operating and maintaining instrumentation listed above.
  • Experience critically evaluating instrumental data.
  • Ability to move and lift objects not heavier than 45 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license.
Additional Requirements:
  • If the analyst will perform expert review, he/she must also meet the Toxicology Analyst (Interpretive) coursework requirements.
  • Membership in a relevant professional organization within one (1) year from date of hire.
  • Certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) within two (2) years from the date of hire or eligibility, whichever is later, to be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Upon employment, employee shall take and pass the licensure examination provided by the Texas Forensic Science Commission; licensure must be maintained for the duration of employment.
