Forensic Biologist

Salary: $61,001.72 - $80,010.58 Annually

The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present or possible future vacancies in this classification. For each vacancy, a Department Director/Division Manager has the choice of the applicants in the top group. This list will remain in effect for six months, unless exhausted, superseded by a new eligible list or extended for another six months by the Human Resources Committee.

  • Under direction, the work of the Forensic Biologist will involve the scientific examination, testing and analysis of genetic material on forensic evidence by employing scientifically validated methods for body fluid identification and DNA analysis.
  • The Forensic Biologist also will evaluate and analyze results, prepare written reports, and testify as an expert witness in a court of law.
  • Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.


At the time of application, applicants must:
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or closely related area; AND
  • Have successfully completed one course in statistics and/or population genetics; AND
  • Have successfully competed at least one course, with a minimum of nine (9) cumulative semester hours, in each of the required subject areas:
    • Biochemistry
    • Genetics
    • Molecular Biology
  • Have at least six (6) months of full-time forensic human DNA laboratory experience obtained at a laboratory where forensic DNA testing was conducted for the identification and evaluation of biological evidence in criminal matters.
  • Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law.)
  • Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.
  • Pass the total examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.
  • Satisfactorily complete the six month probationary period.
Special Requirements
  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.
  • A field investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, criminal, military, or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff Department before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision.Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.
