The Medicolegal Death Investigator (MDI) will conduct death investigations (including death scene investigations) to collect data and evidence used by the Chief Medical Examiner (or his/her designates) in their official duties. The MDI may serve as a liaison between the Lubbock County Medical Examiner (LCME), next-of-kin, and community stakeholders.

Duties:

  • Receive reports of death and determine jurisdiction of LCME according to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Article 49.25. (LCME is responsible for death investigation 24 hours per day 365 days per year. Investigators will rotate night, weekend and holiday duty).
  • Effectively handle out of county death reports and obtain necessary information for a body sent for autopsy to the LCME office.
  • Investigate deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the LCME according to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Article 49.25.
  • Respond to death scenes, and document circumstances with written report and photography of scene and remains.
  • Proper knowledge of photography of human remains, personal belongings and evidence using appropriate labels as directed by the Medical Examiner.
  • Assist Medical Examiner with evidence/property identification, documentation, transfer and retention.
  • Investigate in an accurate manner any out of county deaths received for an autopsy performed by the LCME.
  • Generate Chain of Custody and obtain transfer signatures for all evidence, personal belongings and biological specimens as directed by Medical Examiner.
  • Enter death investigation report, scene photographs, evidence/personal belongings, and Chain-of-Custody information into data collection system for Lubbock County and out of county cases.
  • As required/directed, prepare any paperwork and/or requisitions for specimen/evidence submission for testing/analysis.
  • Facilitate transfer/submission of specimens/evidence using proper Chain of Custody transfer forms, as directed by Medical Examiner.
  • Help maintain records and files in paper or electronic format(s), as required.
  • Must be able to work evenings/nights/weekends/holidays and on call as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in a related field.
  • Registered Medicolegal Investigator by ABMDI (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators) or have filled all the requirements to become registered at the time of hire with the requirement to become registered within 24 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Texas county and Texas state laws regarding death investigation.
  • Demonstrated the ability to properly identify, photograph, document, preserve and properly retain all evidence and personal belongings.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs.
  • Confidentiality of all that is seen and heard during the scope of the job is required at all times.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Able to perform assigned duties while working with human remains (where death could be due to any of the spectrum of causes), and in all phases of preservation.
  • Unpleasant odors are common.
  • Confidentiality of all that is seen and heard during the investigation and examination of death is required.
  • Ability to make professional presentations as required and works independently.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
  • Maintain the ability to stand; walk; kneel; bend; reach; grip; use fine dexterity; push and pull objects; flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees; lift/turn/roll bodies over 100 pounds; occasionally rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing; place arms above, at or below shoulder height; use of vision and depth perception; ability to speak clearly and hear.
