Deputy Coroner

Berkeley County Coroner, Moncks Corner, South Carolina

Salary: $33,614.82 - $38,657.04 Annually

This position typically provides the conduction death investigations to determine the cause and manner of death as required by law; uses various methods to determine cause; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.

Duties:

  • Performs investigations including those of all suspicious and violent deaths, deaths that occur less than 24 hours after hospital admittance, emergency room deaths, traumatic death, hospice deaths, military deaths or those deaths involving abuse of the deceased.
  • Locates and notifies the proper relatives of a death in the family.
  • Ensures that evidence is preserved at the death scene.
  • Utilizes the assistance of medical and law enforcement personnel to determine the cause of death to determine if the death was natural, accidental, homicidal or of other causes.
  • Recommends to the coroner whether an autopsy is to be performed.
  • Assists the Coroner in holding inquests, conducting Coroner Reviews and may testify at trial.
  • Obtains medical records.
  • Issues burial removal permits and authorizes and issues cremation letters to appropriate parties.
  • Assists relatives of deceased as to issues regarding payment of insurance policies or burial benefits by providing information concerning circumstances of death.
  • Signs death certificates, takes statements, subpoenas records and maintains permanent records on every case.
  • Supervises other staff members.
  • Works closely with the County's Emergency Preparedness team if a disaster should occur.
  • Works with funeral homes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of related experience;
Special Requirements:
  • Must obtain the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Coroner Certification within 1 (one) year of employment;
  • Must be able to obtain the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators certification within 24 months of employment; Employee will be asked to resign or will be separated from employment if required certifications are not maintained.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skill in using personal computers including Word or other commonly accepted word processing application.
  • Ability to manage inventory and property.
  • Ability to make budget recommendations.
Physical Demands
  • This position requires the employee to sit; stand; walk; and use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; stoop; kneel; crouch and crawl; reach with hands and arms; use mental acuity; and walk, talk and hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift, pull, push and/or move up to one hundred and eighty (180) pounds with one assistant.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions
  • The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. The normal work schedule is thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Requires a rotational on-call schedule, to include after hours, holidays and weekends, due to the nature of the position. Emergency situations may require work outside of the normally scheduled hours or on-call assignment. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during special events or emergency situations.
