Duties:

  • Analyze and evaluate from audio/video media available to assist in the identification of suspects, evidence, and crimes committed involving video or audio recordings;
  • Conduct analysis of pertinent media and prepare output materials for investigative units, prosecutorial staff, district officers, public information officers and media outlets; act as an audio/video support unit for all investigative units and district personnel on this department; provide forensic video support to other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Receive and maintain audio and video evidence from both law enforcement personnel and civilians; ensure evidence is stored in accordance with office procedures.
  • Lend technical support and assistance to law enforcement personnel in the collection of video or audio recording connected to an ongoing investigation; address and maintain chain of custody issues on evidence collected.
  • Maintain forensic computer systems, digital cameras, related printers, portable hard drives, jump drives, disc drives and other related forensic and or computer equipment as directed
  • Respond to crime scenes and/or other specified locations to document video / audio systems present; verify working order of these systems; document camera locations, microphone locations, types and locations of data stored as well as local camera settings when possible.
  • Conduct research to include internet and other published reports concerning proprietary audio/video codecs and file formats; locate and acquire proprietary viewers/players; install, configure and operate these viewers and players.
  • Attend task specific training to attain and maintain proficiency in the field of audio/video forensic analysis.
  • Assist law enforcement personnel in the preparation of and execution of search warrants which involve the collection of audio/video evidence.
  • Prepare reports and testify in court proceedings.
  • Assists with routine administrative duties as required.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Digital/Media Forensics, a technical discipline or a closely related field and no less than two years of previous forensic video/audio experience. Equivalent experience as an audio/video forensic analyst may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated skills in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing work assignments.
  • The ability to work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Additional specialized course(s) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of digital evidence collection, preservation and handling.
  • Candidates must pass a background investigation for this position.
Independent Judgment
  • Position requires the knowledge of established law, policy and procedure, which controls much of the incumbent(s) administrative actions. Incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment when analyzing crime trends and patterns, and recommending strategies. By virtue of the position, the incumbent will be an integral part of many ongoing investigations and plans. This requires the person to possess and exercise unfailing discretion with the confidential knowledge to which the incumbent has been given.
