Latent Print Examiner

Salary: $35.00 - $45.00 Hourly

Hiring Salary: $35.00/hour (without IAI certification, with a minimum of two years full-time latent print experience) -OR- $45.00/hour (with preferred IAI certification and a minimum of two years full-time latent print experience)

Part-time Latent Print Examiner (Contract Position), 16-32 hours per week. Examines fingerprint evidence related to criminal investigations. Uses ACE-V methodology to determine suitability for comparison; uses the Biometric Identification System (BIS – formerly AFIS) and Next Generation Identification system (NGI – formerly IAFIS) to develop potential subjects for further comparison; and compares suitable latent prints to known finger/palm records. In some cases, may be required to use the Henry Classification System to locate old fingerprint records. Courtroom testimony may be required to support work performed.

Duties:

  • Examines fingerprint evidence left at crime scene and attempts to identify suspects.
  • Compares latent prints to the prints of known suspects.
  • Uses the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to search for a match. May be required to use the Henry System of Identification for locating old prints.
  • Compiles reports on examination findings and enters data into computer systems.
  • Reviews work performed by other Latent Examiners.
  • May be required to testify in court hearings about work performed.

Requirements:

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B. S.) from a four-year college or university in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field plus two (2) years as a full-time latent print examiner; or Associate's Degree (A. A. or A. S.) in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field plus four (4) years as a full-time latent print examiner; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications:
  • International Association for Identification (IAI) Latent Print Examiner Certification, preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands to handle or feel.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus (e.g., utilizes comparator, computer screen, AFIS, and loop while comparing prints).
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to identify deceased prints (either latent prints or at the morgue) that may contain old blood.
  • Work is generally performed in a standard office setting.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Must be available for twenty-four (24) hour call out.
