Forensic Biologist Criminalist (DNA)

Salary: $2,173.70 - $2,391.07 Biweekly

This is an advanced biological position, involving the independent application of laboratory techniques, materials, equipment, and instrumentation in the performance of laboratory examinations of evidence, the preparation of reports, and the rendering of expert testimony in courts of law regarding evidence of a biological nature.

  • The identification, analyses, and evaluation of fluids and stains of biological origin.
  • The processing and analyses of Sexual Assault Kits.
  • The conducting of independent research/validation in the area of forensic biology under the supervision of a Senior Forensic Biologist.
  • Successful completion of an oral and/or written competency test. Successful completion of a yearly internal administered proficiency test (practical). Successful completion of external proficiency tests as outlined in Standard 13.1 of the F.B.I. Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA testing laboratories.
  • Testify as an expert witness before courts and other judicial bodies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Crime Laboratory Director or the Chief Medical Examiner.


  • TO APPLY, must have a Bachelor's degree in a Life Science and Three (3) full-time years of work experience in a life sciences laboratory
  • OR
  • TO APPLY, must have a Master's degree or higher in a Life Science and One (1) full-time year of work experience in a life sciences laboratory.
  • Degrees in Biology or Biochemistry preferred. Experience may include university laboratory assistantships.
  • Must be licensed in Texas as a forensic analyst or awarded a provisional license by January 1, 2019.
  • If duties will include DNA analyses, candidate must meet the educational requirements as defined by the FBI's Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA testing Laboratories, section 5.3.
  • Court qualification as an expert in forensic biology/DNA is desirable; thorough working knowledge of the techniques and principals of biology including compound and comparison microscopes and general and specialized laboratory chemicals and equipment; active membership in the Criminalistics sections of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, as well as other learned organizations dealing with the analyses of blood and body fluids.
Physical Demands and Work Environment & Other Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, lift, push and pull.
