The Iowa Department of Public Safety is looking to fill three Criminalist vacancies to assist the state.

Duties:

  • This position collects and preserves evidence and performs scientific analysis of physical materials in the investigation of crimes for the Division of Criminal Investigation Crime Laboratory; performs related work as required.
  • Performs forensic science analysis, research and training; crime scene work; speaks and trains peace officers and fire fighters; court testimony and report writing.
  • This position will be assigned to the DNA section of the laboratory and must meet the criteria listed below.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics or a closely related physical or natural laboratory science;
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of experience in a crime laboratory performing firearms identification, latent print identification, document examination, trace evidence, forensic toxicology, forensic serology, forensic photography, or crime scene investigation and forensic training, for one year (thirty semester hours) of the required education.

The candidate must have, at a minimum, a BA/BS degree or its equivalent degree in biology, chemistry or a forensic science-related area and must have successfully completed college course work (graduate or undergraduate level) covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology) or other subjects which provide a basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis, as well as course work and/or training in statistics and population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis. For the above mentioned college coursework (biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology), the candidate must have a total of nine or more cumulative semester or equivalent hours in these areas. Successful applicant will need to have Selective Certification #950 DNA as listed in theCriminalist (06018) job description.

Ability to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety.
