  • Investigates crimes scenes located or initiated within the geographic jurisdiction of Wake County at the request of law enforcement.
  • Interviews witnesses, victims, and investigating officers to determine the scope of the investigations and methods to be utilized in gathering evidence.
  • Identifies, documents, collects, packages, and transports physical evidence for scientific evaluation and court presentation.
  • Maintains the integrity and chain of custody of all collected evidence.
  • Processes and tests evidence in a laboratory environment using a variety of chemicals and equipment for the further development of forensic evidence.
  • Prepares detailed reports regarding observation and activities.
  • Aids in the identification of deceased persons or suspects.
  • Testifies as an expert witness in court.
  • IAI Crime Scene Certification required within 2 years of certification eligibility and must maintain a current certification thereafter.


Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Natural/Forensic Science, or related field.
  • A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record.
  • IAI Crime Scene Certification required within 2 years of eligibility or employment. Must maintain current certification thereafter.
  • Applicant must successfully complete a psychological fitness for duty examination, a pre-employment polygraph examination, and a pre-employment drug test.
Preferred Experience
  • Two years of experience in the identification, documentation, and collection of physical evidence at crime scenes.

  • Ability to firmly adhere to codes of conduct and ethical principles;
  • Ability to deal with highly stressful situations calmly and effectively;
  • Ability to maintain concentration and effectiveness when experiencing changes in work tasks or environments;
  • Ability to accomplish tasks and processes accurately and completely;
  • Ability to accurately record information and convey that information in written and oral form to others to ensure understanding
  • Ability to use documentation tools, computer software, and evidence processing equipment.
