Laboratory Assistant I

The County of San Luis Obispo's Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly qualified Part-Time Laboratory Assistant to be part of the County's Crime Lab.

As a Laboratory Assistant you will be responsible for a variety of well-defined technical procedures involving biological, chemical or related methods in preparing and processing laboratory specimens, material or supplies for testing. The individual will be required to operate and maintain laboratory equipment including forensic related computer systems and software. Additionally, you will gather, log and store evidence from crime scenes and keep detailed records of your research findings and investigative methods. You will be required to write detailed reports on the results of your findings. In this role you may be required to testify in court as to crime lab processes, analytical results and experience.

Duties:

Cleans and sterilizes laboratory supplies, materials and equipment using specialized mechanical equipment or manual methods; prepares media, reagents, stains, and sterile solutions; instructs patients regarding specimen collection and routing; processes biological specimens in preparation for analysis -involving proper labeling, centrifugation, separation, sorting and appropriate packaging and shipping; performs non-diagnostic analytic procedures on human specimens under the supervision of a Microbiologist; performs analytic procedures on environmental water and shellfish specimens under the supervision of a Microbiologist; applies appropriate charges and batches charges for billing; retrieves confidential patient information from the laboratory's computer system; maintains a safe and clean environment; may assist professional staff in performing examinations; may perform phlebotomy (obtaining blood specimens through venipuncture or skin puncture).

Requirements:

The Ideal Candidate
  • The ideal candidate will have a passion for playing an integral role in the criminal justice system and be someone who has a strong moral and ethical compass. We are seeking candidates who possess excellent problem solving skills and can put small pieces together to solve a puzzle. Incumbents with exceptional attention to detail and analytical skills will be most successful in this role. Strong communication skills both verbally and in writing is a must. This position requires a strong laboratory background in organic and inorganic chemistry.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate,
  • AND
  • Six months experience in a laboratory or in a medically related field such as Emergency Medical Technician, veterinary assistant, or medical assistant; OR One year experience in a medically oriented job that included using medical terminology and basic typing or computer skills; OR Completion of one year of schooling in an accredited college or university in microbiology, including completion of lab coursework.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
  • May be required to become certified in phlebotomy.
