Forensic Scientist - Toxicology/Blood Alcohol

Salary: $1,565.60 - $2,689.60 Biweekly

At the trainee level, the incumbent, under the direction of a senior analyst or unit supervisor, receives, examines, and evaluates evidence for alcohol and drug content in connection with criminal cases and death investigations. The incumbent progresses through the series, gaining knowledge and skills, to work independently and become an expert able to testify in court.

Duties:

  • This position evaluates incoming evidence to determine whether substances submitted to laboratory contain alcohol via instrumentation, microscopy, or other analytical techniques.
  • This position evaluates incoming evidence to determine whether substances submitted to laboratory contain drugs via instrumentation, microscopy, or other analytical techniques.
  • After appropriate training period, employee is recognized as a court qualified expert in the area of Toxicology providing expert testimony in a court of law Individual tasks related to the duty.
  • Will conduct research and training related to the Toxicology Unit.
  • May assist with miscellaneous maintenance/logistical/clerical tasks.

Requirements:

Education
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science.
Experience
  • Forensic Scientist 9 - No specific type or amount is required.
  • Forensic Scientist 10 - One year of professional experience working in a crime laboratory carrying out a variety of tests, analyses or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical, biological or physical evidence samples, specimens, or products equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 9.
  • Forensic Scientist P11 - Two years of professional experience working in a crime laboratory carrying out a variety of tests, analyses or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical, biological or physical evidence samples, specimens, or products equivalent to a Forensic Scientist, including one year equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 10.
Additional Requirements and Information
  • As a condition of employment, the selected applicant is required to submit a DNA sample for inclusion into the DNA Staff Index. Upon hire, the applicant will be required to pass an FBI background check in order to be a user of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). If the federal background check is not passed, employment may be terminated.
  • This position requires passing a pre-employment screening, including passing a drug screen, criminal history background check and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.
