Computer Forensic Analyst

This position is in the Detective Bureau of the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. The incumbent works closely with 22 Detectives, forensically analyzing digital evidence to be used in criminal proceedings.

Duties:

  • Designs, installs, and maintains computer forensics lab (CFL) networks, servers and network based applications.
  • Develops, coordinates and implements long and short-range plans for the upgrading, disposition, and replacement of major equipment within the CFL, including participation in the request for purchase process.
  • Evaluates, tests and analyzes selection of specialized software packages to aid in the analysis of computer crimes.
  • Prepare and organize recovered information in suitable format for agency review; complete clear, concise, and truthful reports explaining outcome of examinations performed, findings and conclusions, and maintain detailed logs of case activity status.
  • Prepare and follow through with court testimony related to criminal investigations involving digital evidence recovery.
  • Responsible for detailed analysis of computer labs computing needs, requirements, and business practices, and makes appropriate recommendation regarding computerization and design of workflow.
  • Maintains and controls computer forensics lab software licenses to insure appropriate access, levels of service, and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Develops policies and procedures in the areas of information collection, evaluation, analysis, evidence collection, retention, and disposal.
  • Oversee large projects within the CFL and provide training and assistance to federal, state, and local agencies in the area of digital evidence collection.
  • Designs and implements investigative plans to identify areas of follow up and bring assigned project initiatives to a successful and timely conclusion.
  • Provides system support and technical input within CFL.
  • Conducts detailed forensic analysis of various forms of digital media, using current industry standards and tools, to extract, recover, memorialize and preserve evidence of crimes.
  • Research and analyze additional software requirements; evaluates feasibility of purchases within the CFL in accordance with department mission and budgetary limitations.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with co-workers, employees and staff from other law enforcement agencies to facilitate open communications for the purposes of obtaining information to further investigations; and sharing ideas pertaining to computer forensics analytical methods, tools and techniques.
  • Participates in formal classroom instruction to develop, and maintain, knowledge and skills in the computer forensics analysis process and the application of proper computer forensics analytical methods and techniques.
  • Develops and conducts training for group or one-on-one basis, to include the development of training materials.
  • Advises and assists co-workers in the resolution and discovery of evidence, and in the maintenance and building of computer forensic reports.
  • Consults with detectives and detective bureau supervision regarding the selection, installation, and use of computer forensics lab applications as well as microcomputer hardware and software, and makes recommendations to improve operational needs.
  • Provides ongoing support and maintenance of applications by analyzing and resolving problems, and by developing software enhancements and modifications to existing systems and purchased software.

Requirements:

You must meet these minimum Training and Experience requirements:
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in one or more appropriate areas such as computer operations, information processing, systems analysis, system support, applications development, microcomputer support, network support, database analysis or support or a closely related field.
  • Post high school education from a recognized technical school, college, or university in computer science or a related area may be substituted for part of the work experience as follows:
    • Associate degree and three years of work experience
    • Bachelor's degree and two years of work experience
    • Master's degree and one year of work experience
