Duties:

  • Responsible for the administration of the technical and scientific operations of the CoDIS computer network within the DNA Data Bank, including supervision of procedures and reports of CoDIS finds.
  • Ensures that the DNA Data Bank Laboratory is operating in accordance with the New York State guidelines for DNA analysis, and that all protocols meet professional standards for Forensic DNA Data Bank analysis.
  • Oversees developments within the field of DNA Data Bank typing by reading current scientific literature and by attending seminars, courses, professional meetings or documented training sessions/classes in relevant subject areas at least once per year. Responsible for evaluating all methods used by the laboratory and for implementation and validation of new or modified analytical procedures.
  • Provides continuing education programs and serves as a resource person for Investigators, Evidence Technicians and other law enforcement personnel.
  • Ensures that the CoDIS computer network is operating in accordance with national and New York State guidelines, and that all protocols meet professional standards for forensic DNA Data Bank analysis.
  • Manages the Laboratory's CoDIS network and is responsible for the security of the DNA profile data stored in CoDIS.
  • Responsible for oversight of CoDIS computer training and quality assurance of data.
  • Responsible for evaluating all methods used by the Laboratory and for implementation and validation of new or modified CoDIS procedures.
  • Possess the authority to terminate the Laboratory's participation in CoDIS in the event of a problem until the reliability of the computer data can be assured. The CoDIS Custodian has authority over all CoDIS sites under his/her jurisdiction.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in areas related to biology, chemistry, forensic science or computer science.
  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours in a combination of graduate and undergraduate course work covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, as well as statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis.
  • A minimum of six years satisfactory experience performing the duties of a Forensic Scientist or its equivalent in another forensic laboratory.
  • A Master's Degree in areas related to biology, chemistry, forensic science or computer science may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates possessing:
  • Working knowledge of computers, computer networks and computer database management, with an understanding of DNA technology.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant problem solving or related analytical laboratory experience using the techniques of modern molecular biology.
  • Substantial experience in computer database management, strong working knowledge of computer networks and significant experience with computer hardware and software.
