Performs responsible technical and investigative work involving the identification, gathering, and preservation of evidence related to firearms and tool marks; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Work is performed in a regular 40 hour week based on a day schedule with on-call as needed basis; operates vehicles in normal and adverse weather conditions; performs safety and operational analysis of firearms; examines, identifies, and analyzes firearms and physical evidence including bullets, cartridge cases, shot shells, wadding, and live ammunition; specializes in the usage of IBIS (Integrated Ballistic Identification System) and conducts entry and automated, preliminary comparison utilizing the IBIS terminal; evaluates and compares forensic firearm and tool mark evidence to known standards utilizing a verification methodology utilizing microscopes; produce known standards of forensic firearm and tool mark evidence utilizing case evidence or comparable case evidence in a controlled environment; assists with maintaining all forensic firearm and tool mark files and evidence; processes firearm and tool mark evidence for possible latent prints and DNA evidence utilizing a variety of chemicals and non-chemical techniques; performs serial number restoration on forensic firearm evidence; chemical testing for trace metals; projectile trajectory determination; reconstruction and diagraming of shooting events; and providing assistance of technical nature to investigators; respond to crime scenes to perform examinations and assist in documentation and collection of evidence; performs administrative tasks; prepares evidence for court presentations; presenting courtroom testimony in District, State, and Federal Courts maintains confidentiality; prepares detailed investigative and supplemental case reports of activities and investigations; effectively communicates with investigators, court personnel, suspects, and citizens; remains abreast of technological and procedural advances in the firearms discipline; does related work as required.
