Duties:

Reports to Firearms Laboratory Manager
  • Inventories, documents and evaluates various types of firearms for possible entry into the IBIS / NIBIN database.
  • Test fires appropriate calibers and types of firearms.
  • Conducts restoration of obliterated serial numbers on firearms.
  • Receives, releases and maintains evidence submitted for examination.
  • Issues reports accurately reflecting the results of examinations.
  • Testifies in court relating to the results of examination.
  • Conducts administrative reviews of other technician's reports.
  • Routinely works Law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, educators and peers during professional training or participation in accreditation or certification visits.

Requirements:

Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from a four year accredited institution with a major in the natural sciences (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or Forensic Science.
  • Computer literacy in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to safely test and fire all types of firearms on a routine basis.
  • Maintain a valid Texas driver's license and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Additional Requirements:
  • Candidate must meet licensure requirements as established by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.
Plus:
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time while seated at the IBIS Brasstrax unit.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time at a personal computer.
  • Able to evaluate test fired specimens in order to follow IBIS entry protocols.
Physical Requirements:
  • Physical activities include, but are not limited to, standing, walking, running, talking and hearing.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy items up to 50 lbs.
Preferences
  • Experience in a firearms laboratory, including experience in the test firing and evaluation of all types of firearms.
  • Experience utilizing the NIBIN / IBIS technology.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and requirements of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) –International program or ISO 17025:2005.
