Under the direction of the Forensic Imaging Director, the employee will provide photography services to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences for the documentation of forensic casework.

Duties:

  • Produces postmortem examination photographs using digital SLR cameras to document pertinent finding as determined by the forensic pathologist
  • Logs and archives each photograph acquired at death scenes and during postmortem examination by case number to ensure that all images are properly stored and secured
  • Provides photographic coverage of agency events as assigned for publication
  • Provides technical expertise on the capabilities and limitations of forensic photographs to police officers, attorneys, judges, nurses, and physicians as required
  • May respond to death scenes to photograph all details pertinent to the death investigation
  • Testifies when subpoenaed regarding the photographic images that document the death scene and the decedent during autopsy
  • Assists in the troubleshooting and repair of cameras and accessories at the request of the Forensic Imaging Director
  • May digitally process photographs at the request of the Forensic Imaging Director using digital imaging software and related tools
  • Requires work in close proximity to various biological fluids – potential exposure to blood borne pathogens
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Forensic Genetics Laboratory Director.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Photography or a related degree with advanced photography coursework.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in photography.
  • Provide with the application a portfolio (digital portfolio preferred) of original photographs demonstrating skill and proficiency in composition, exposure, depth of field, and various lighting techniques in both studio and non-studio environments.
  • Familiar with photographic processing software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Willing to respond to death scenes on a rotating on-call basis.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to climb ladders and bend over for extended periods of time while photographing evidence.
  • Must have the ability to adapt quickly to new applications and challenges and work in a team environment
