To perform a wide variety of specialized duties, involving clerical work, manual labor, and public contact related to the receiving, storing, disposing, and maintaining of property, evidence, and supplies held by the Police Department.

Duties:

  • Receive, record, seal, store, and maintain strict security control of all incoming evidence and property acquired by the Police Department for safekeeping and custody.
  • Maintain logs of all property including identifying information such as model, serial number, and crime report number.
  • Enter and delete serial-numbered property from computer.
  • Transport property to and from the Police Department, court, and other storage locations, in a safe manner, using appropriate equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining chain-of-evidence records of evidential property and may testify in court.
  • Release property to authorized persons in accordance with laws and departmental procedures.
  • Prepare evidence and other property for destruction, return to owner, or auction after receipt of authorization.
  • Assist in the requisition, receipt, storage, and issuance of departmental supplies.
  • Issue and maintain records of departmental safety and technical investigation equipment.
  • Assist in repair of firearms and other safety equipment.
  • Respond to inquiries relating to property by telephone or at the public counter.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Knowledge of:
  • Modern office methods and procedures.
  • Common tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Record keeping associated with storage, taking of inventory, and safeguarding various property.
  • Safe methods of handling and storing of materials and property.
  • Safeguarding of materials and property.
  • General courtesy in dealing with co-workers and public.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to:
  • Perform simple arithmetic and calculations.
  • Lift, move, and store property and supplies.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Interpret and apply departmental policies relating to evidence and property.
  • Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Operate required office and warehouse equipment.
  • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with employees, City departments, governmental agencies, and the general public.
  • Testify in court.
  • Keep complete and accurate records of items received, stored, and issued.
Experience and Education:
  • Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one year of experience in either clerical procedures which involved filing, record keeping and inventory; dealing with the public either in person or over the phone; or working in a warehouse which involved receipt and storage of merchandise.
Special Qualification:
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required for appointment to this classification, and must be maintained in order to continue employment in the classification.
