  • Performs manual and clerical tasks involved with receiving, packaging, marking, logging, inventorying, and storing all items of evidence, safekeeping, destruction or found property submitted by Police Officers; bar codes property and enters information into computerized inventory system; affixes proper tags and labels for inventory control; observes and ensure the proper chain of custody for property and evidence in accordance to Tribal, State and Federal laws;
  • Releases evidence for court or investigative purposes and ensures that the released property and evidence is returned to the Property and Evidence warehouse; answers citizen inquires and complaints regarding property dispositions; and maintain electronic files on all inventoried property.
  • Receives and stores money, narcotics; firearms, ammunition, flammable items, or other items of sensitive nature; ensures the proper storage and security of items.
  • Upon receiving destruction orders from Tribal, State and Federal Courts, properly destroys items of evidence or property no longer required following prescribed Tribal, State and Federal laws and Police Department Policy and Procedures.
  • Removes various types of evidence and property from secured evidence lockers and matches up to property impound sheets; determines correct locations to store evidence or property by item type and enters into computerized inventory system.
  • Transports and retrieves evidence from the Scottsdale Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratories, ensuring the chain of custody is followed in accordance to Tribal, State and Federal laws.
  • May be required to testify in Tribal, State and Federal court on procedures pertaining to the chain of custody of evidence and may be requested to transport evidence to court.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the operating procedures of a Police Department.
  • Knowledge of the equipment used in property and evidence, records, including communications, computers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the principles, codes, regulations, and laws governing records management.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of warehousing, inventory control, material handling, storage, record keeping and property accounting, computer terminal data input and retrieval process.
  • Ability to learn applicable Tribal, State and Federal laws and civil codes and regulations pertaining to the handling and storage of property and evidence.
  • Ability to learn policies, court systems and criminal procedures relative to the processing, retention, and disposal of evidence.
  • Ability to maintain the integrity of the Property and Evidence Room by participating in random audits.
  • Ability to learn safety and security methods and practices, involved in the handling and storage of motor vehicles, firearms, weapons, narcotics, drugs, money and dangerous devices.
  • Ability to maintain legible, complete, and accurate records and related documents.
  • Ability to place property and evidence items and inventory documents in both ascending and descending order by computerized numerical bar codes.
  • Ability to devise and maintain storage, security, and accounting procedures for sensitive, valuable, and unusual supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in the development of procedures for the disposition of property when cases are adjudicated.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and other Tribal employees and members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Ability to move objects weighing less than 50 pounds short and long distances, placing into a vehicle and the ability to walk up and down stairs.


  • Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or completion of a GED equivalent and a minimum of one year experience in property / evidence work, police work, warehousing, inventory control, or related field.
  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling this position.
  • Insurability – Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the SRPMIC insurance standards.
Special Qualifications:
  • Will be required to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening and fingerprint/background checks.
  • Successful completion of Police Department background investigation and polygraph examinations.
  • This position may be expected to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed and is not subject to a standard work schedule.
  • Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
