Duties:

Forensic Scientist I
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: training by means of an intensive training program to include evidence handling, identification of biological material, DNA determination and comparisons, report writing, and court testimony. Process evidence for biological material and DNA determination as training program is completed.
Forensic Scientist II
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: inspect items of evidence for the presence of biological materials. Test biological materials for DNA determinations and comparison. Write reports to document test results. Perform technical reviews of reports from other scientists. Testify to findings as an expert witness in court.
Forensic Scientist III
  • Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Inspect items of evidence for the presence of biological materials. Test biological materials for DNA determinations and comparison. Write reports to document test results. Perform technical reviews of reports from other scientists. Testify to findings as an expert witness in court.

Requirements:

Forensic Scientist I
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field.
    • College coursework in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Statistics.
Forensic Scientist II
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field and two (2) years relevant work experience.
    • College coursework in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Statistics.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in biology case work.
    • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic science laboratory.
Forensic Scientist III
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field and three (3) years relevant work experience.
    • College coursework in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Statistics.
  • Preferred Requirements:
    • Master’s degree (MS) in Forensic Science.
    • Three (3) years of experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in DNA case work.
    • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic science laboratory.
    • Experience testifying in a court of law as a DNA Forensic Scientist.
TRAVEL
  • The position is expected to travel to the locations required to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Occasional in-state and limited out-of-state travel may be required. The incumbent in this position is required to have a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Verification of identity and employment eligibility to work in the United States is required by federal law.
  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment process to include a polygraph examination, fingerprint based records check, and comprehensive background investigation, including reference check of past and present employers.
  • The pre-employment process will be waived for current KBI personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
