Performs responsible technical work involving investigating crime scenes and analyzing associated data. Work involves collecting, processing, documenting and preserving evidence obtained during investigations, testifying in court proceedings regarding crime investigations; processing evidence for latent fingerprints and reconstructing crime scenes to determine the nature of the crime.

  • Prepares detailed reports on information gathered during investigation, to include analysis of evidence and appropriate conclusions based upon subject analysis;
  • Provides support to photo laboratory personnel as necessary;
  • Conducts crime scene investigations and analysis;
  • Collects, processes, and preserves evidence per applicable regulations;
  • Processes evidence for latent fingerprints as required;
  • Reviews latent fingerprints, fingerprint cards, and photographs as necessary to ensure correctness and to assist in ongoing investigations;
  • Ensures fingerprint cards and photographs are properly labeled, organized, and filed;
  • Coordinates follow-up examinations with State Forensic Laboratory, Commonwealth Attorney's office, and department detectives, as required;
  • Testifies in court proceedings regarding crime scene investigations, as required;
  • Assists in gathering evidence from autopsies, to include taking photographs, collecting biological samples, and recording inked impressions and identification of the body;
  • Conducts crime scene reconstruction and diagrams, trajectory analysis of projectiles, and gunshot residue tests;
  • Performs specialized and technical crime scene processing and evidence recovery, to include taking photographs and video recordings, locating, seizing, packaging, and preserving evidence, and complete investigative reports and analysis on same;
  • Performs related fingerprint function, to include recovering, analyzing, and identifying fingerprints; evaluating partial prints; applying chemicals to assist in recovery; and taking photographs of recovered prints;
  • Identifies, collects, and analyzes footwear, tire tracks and tool mark impressions;
  • Conducts training sessions for department personnel on a semi-annual basis.


  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of police procedures, rules of evidence, and search and seizure process; thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of forensic procedures; knowledge of photography (especially crime scene photography), forensic science and fingerprint classification and identification; thorough knowledge of keen observation techniques, attention to detail, adaptability perseverance, and innovation; general knowledge of latent fingerprint recovery; general knowledge of digital imaging, CAD software and mapping software; general knowledge of the geography of Prince William County; ability to operate desktop and/or personal computers and applicable software; ability to coordinate and monitor status of activities; ability to exercise appropriate judgment in establishing work priorities and methods; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to instruct departmental personnel in Crime Scene Analysis techniques; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other County officials.
Education and Experience
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, chemistry, biology, physics or forensic science; and 2-3 years of work experience in specific areas of photography, fingerprint examination, crime scene investigation, or forensic science. Prefer an equivalent of education and experience to a Master's Degree in above disciplines.
Special Requirements
  • Must be able to obtain VCIN Certification within six (6) months of employment;
  • Must pass a polygraph examination, background investigation, credit check, criminal record check;
  • Must pass physical examination to include drug screen;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Must pass DMV record check.
