Police Property Technician

Wilmington Police Department, Wilmington, North Carolina

Salary: $29,411.20 Annually

Provide assistance to officers and the public regarding evidence and found property, and coordinate police evidence and found property operations by reviewing items from officers and the public, making computerized and written descriptions, transporting items to appropriate locations, retrieving items, sending and receiving items from crime lab, completing forms and packaging of items, answering telephone and walk-in inquiries, researching and returning property to owners, testifying in court, recording status of items, and maintaining security and integrity of confidential files. Other duties include coordinating shipping and receiving of items, serving as department mailperson, and serving as backup Quartermaster.

Duties:

  • Perform property and evidence technician duties by retrieving property and evidence from lockers; checking paperwork for accurate information; entering information on computer; contacting officers if mistakes are made; assigning warehouse location, retrieving property/evidence; signing all evidence in and out; ensuring evidence is tracked properly; maintaining security and integrity of confidential files; and testifying in court.
  • Perform destruction of narcotics and assist with the destruction of weapons, evidence and property at various landfills and other locations by completing requests for destruction; doing audits of cash, narcotics and weapons with professional standards before destruction of cases; researching cases with the court to make sure they are closed before destruction; and maintaining account of internal cash that is taken to the bank for deposit.
  • Serve as backup mailperson and assist with shipping and receiving items by signing for deliveries, determining who item belongs to, delivering packages, and ensuring outgoing packages are correctly packaged and labeled.
  • Work with outside police agencies such as DA's Office, ATF, FBI, SBI and police lawyer, as well as members of the WPD.

Requirements:

Education:
  • High School Diploma, or GED.
Experience:
  • Minimum one (1) year of full-time experience performing responsible clerical work, warehousing and inventory control; with considerable knowledge of personal computers and software programs.
Other Requirements:
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Driving and criminal history check is required.
  • The selected candidate will also be required to complete a post-offer drug-screen and polygraph examination.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience performing responsible clerical work, warehousing and inventory control; with considerable knowledge of personal computers and software programs.
  • Current and/or prior experience working in a law enforcement, court or attorney's office.
  • Knowledge of inventory control, data entry experience, and the ability to maintain current records and logs.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as state and federal laws governing the handling and disposition of evidence, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence.
