Forensic Toxicology Chemist

Salary: $59,805.72 - $78,441.74 Annually

The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present or possible future vacancies in this classification. For each vacancy, a Department Director/Division Manager has the choice of the applicants in the top group. This list will remain in effect for six months, unless exhausted, superseded by a new eligible list or extended for another six months by the Human Resources Committee.

Under general supervision, performs chemical analysis of solid chemical substances for the detection of drugs. Performs confirmation of all chemical tests. Prepares reagents, calibration standards, and control samples used in analytical methods. Follows direction as to which of the laboratory standard analyses are to be performed for each case. Compiles information and prepares technical reports regarding the analytical findings. Participates in the peer review process of tests and data collected from sample analysis. May testify in court regarding laboratory test results, procedures and operations. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.


At the time of application, applicants must:
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related Forensic Science or Biomedical degree; AND Have had two (2) years of full-time analytical experience in Toxicology or Forensic Chemistry;
  • OR
  • Possess a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Forensic Toxicology, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related Forensic Science or Biomedical Science field; AND Have had one (1) year of full-time analytical experience in Toxicology or Forensic Chemistry.

  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical, established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six-month probationary period.
Special Requirements
  • A field investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, credit, criminal, military or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff Office before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision.
