Fingerprint Technician

Salary: $29,772.00 - $41,508.00 Annually

There are two permanent full-time positions with the Department of State Police, Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Salem. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future openings.

These positions analyze fingerprint cards received from various agencies throughout the state to establish positive identification for background check purposes and establishing new State ID numbers (SID) and adding subsequent arrest segments by utilizing the Automated Biometric Identification System and master card file. Prepares and disseminates accurate criminal history information to authorized requesting agencies in support of regulatory fingerprint background check process and our criminal justice agency partners. Duties:

  • Performs various inquiries, using ABIS Fingerprint workstation for automated search of the fingerprint database and verifying results of the automated search. Compares candidates for positive identification. Performs various maintenance functions on ABIS, including: updates, fingerprint substitutions, deletions, registrations, and conversions. Prepares information and gives court testimony to identification (comparisons) made for various agencies. Trains new employees on ABIS/Regulatory procedures when requested.
  • Processes incoming fingerprint submissions from various law enforcement and non-criminal justice agencies via direct submit livescan devices and mailed/shuttled hard card submissions. This includes opening mail and resolving problems or deficiencies when possible. Screens and rejects deficient fingerprint cards to contributor indicating correction required, runs criminal history, clocks and tallies specific fingerprint cards, identifies cards, assigns SID numbers, and enters card information into the FOCUS client program. Reviews information received from LEDS and the FBI. Makes quality assurance of results received from fingerprint background searches for dissemination back to the contributing agency.
  • Compares tentatively identified fingerprint cards and DNA cards to existing fingerprint records for positive identification using Master card files, ABIS electronic images, and Laserfiche imaging system records on file. Makes the determination to add information to an individual's Computerized Criminal History (CCH) based on positive identification of fingerprints.

Requirements:

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for the Office Specialist 2 may be considered for a developmental program until they meet the minimum qualifications for the Fingerprint Technician classification. Pay would be at the OS2 level until MQ's are met.

Fingerprint Technician qualifications $2,667 - $3,793 per month
  • One year of experience in fingerprint pattern determination/ridge encoding using an Automated Fingerprint Identification System OR
  • Completion of a 40-hour Federal Bureau of Investigations Basic Fingerprint Identification course or its equivalent.
Office Specialist 2 qualifications $2,481 - $3,459 per month
  • Two years of general clerical experience, one year of which included typing, word processing, or other experience generating document; OR
  • An Associate's degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology; OR
  • College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology; and one year of general clerical experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience using a database to enter and retrieve information
  • Experience with proofreading documents for accuracy
  • Experience in a production environment
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to identify basic and minute differences
  • Ability to work non-traditional shifts in a 24/7 work unit
