Salary: $54,974.00 - $76,419.00 Annually

This position consists of Police Department, non-commissioned work with regards to the documentation, collection, processing and preservation of evidence, and providing assistance to other Police Department personnel as needed. Provide holistic services to the public by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions and agencies. Duties:

  • Performs crime scene investigations for the Broomfield Police Department to include, but not limited to: photographic documentation of the scene using various types of photography. Processes a crime scene to locate and collect physical evidence for scientific evaluation. Performs some laboratory examinations using scientific techniques. Provides courtroom testimony regarding the findings and processing methods used at the crime scene or in the lab; and or provides expert witness testimony in an administrative hearing. Identifies and recommends improvements in divisional and departmental operations to ensure support functions are efficient and cost-effective. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment. Performs other related duties as required.
  • For the purpose of conducting searches, the incumbent must be able to examine small areas, high areas, attics, crawl spaces, basements, or any other location where evidence may be found. The incumbent may be required to walk long distances through all types of weather to get to a crime scene. Performs tasks that require lifting, carrying, or dragging heavy objects or large bulky items of evidence. Delivers oral presentations to various groups (schools, homeowners associations, and civic organizations etc.) Trains police officers regarding the collection and preservation of evidence. Conducts facility tours. Regularly maintains all lab and evidence collection equipment to keep it functioning properly. Keeps accurate inventory of supplies for ordering. Requires knowledge in the handling of hazardous and bio-hazardous materials in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Participates in post-mortem examinations to obtain fingerprints, nail scrapings, collect clothing and other evidence as needed in any death investigations. Completes computer-generated reports regarding observations and investigations. Prepares crime scene diagrams and/or graphic representations of crime scenes. Accurately enters and retrieves information from City and County computers. Communicates effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Reads and comprehends rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for the purpose of ensuring appropriate behavior/response when performing activities involving the public.

Requirements:

  • Training - Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in related field, preferably including science such as forensic science, criminalistics, chemistry, or a directly related field. Training in basic fingerprint processing, blood spatter analysis, crime scene reconstruction, footwear/tire track evidence, forensic video analysis, and basic crime scene photography. Certification in any discipline is preferred.
  • Experience – Two years relevant experience in crime scene investigation and evidence collection.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: -
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.Cannot have been convicted of a felony or a disqualifying misdemeanor involving moral turpitude; must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, drug screen, CVSA/polygraph, medical/vision examination, psychological examination, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.
Working Conditions:
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing these duties, the incumbent may work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. The noise level in the environment is moderately noisy. Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday; however, the incumbent may be called out at anytime 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The incumbent's schedule can be changed with no advance notice and mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notification. The incumbent may occasionally work in high precarious places; near moving mechanical parts; in enclosed places, in tight places, in conditions of extreme heat and cold, and may occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles. The incumbent must be able to examine small areas, high areas, attics, crawl spaces, basements, or any other location where evidence may be found. The incumbent may be required to walk long distances through all types of weather to get to a crime scene. Physical demands are described as heavy (exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Data entry and other tasks may require sitting at a computer for several hours.
