Latent Print Examiner/Technical Coordinator

Salary: $46,841.00 - $77,288.00 Annually

This is an exempt position, which is skilled technical work in classifying and identifying fingerprints, maintaining fingerprint files, supplies and equipment in the I.D. Unit. Processes crime scenes for latent evidence, photographs and collection of evidence for courtroom presentation. Work is performed under the general direction of the Investigations Division Sergeant.

  • Has the ability to fully function as a crime scene technician.
  • Trains Identification Technicians in a variety of technical services, activities and the classification and examination of latent prints, crime scene work and court presentation.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the technical services area, supplies and equipment.
  • Processes crime scenes for latent evidence, photographs and collection of evidence for courtroom presentation.
  • Classifies and compares fingerprints in accordance with current standards.
  • Maintains a filing system related to standard fingerprints, crime scene fingerprints, arrest photos, crime scene photos and criminal activities.
  • Prepares reports and charts fingerprint comparisons and makes expert court presentations.
  • Maintains and analyzes monthly statistics.
  • This position does not have final procurement authority.
  • Performs related work as required and as directed.


Typical Qualifications
  • Knowledge and skill in crime scene processing, photography, and film processing.
  • Knowledge of fingerprint classification, file search, comparison and charting.
  • Ability to produce authoritative evidence to the courts in the form of testimony and the graphic representation of "charted" comparisons.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and operate a police radio.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize work assignments and to work independently.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and the use of standard software applications.
  • Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
  • Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other municipal employees, City officials, and the general public.
  • Graduation from a standard high school or an equivalent recognized certificate. Five (5) years of experience in the comparison and identification of latent fingerprints. Three (3) years experience in the field of crime scene technology.
  • Successful completion of the FBI Basic and Advanced Latent Fingerprint School or its equivalent. Applicants must attach copies of certificates for these schools.
  • Qualified as an expert in the field of fingerprint comparisons by the courts in the State of Florida; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
Supplemental Information
  • Must currently possess or be eligible to obtain, a Florida driver's license with an overall good driving record. No single suspension of driver's license within the past two (2) years and no more than two (2) suspensions within the past five (5) year history (except if suspension was due to insurance error or clerk of court error).
