Salary: $55,496 - $71,070 for levels I, II, and III; $77,287 - $102,457 for the Senior Examiner level

The Onondaga County Center for Forensic Sciences is seeking to fill a Latent Print Examiner position. The level to which the position will be filled will be dependent on the qualifications of the individual hired. The Center for Forensic Sciences is a full-service ASCLD/LAB-International accredited forensic laboratory outfitted with state of the art equipment and technology. Onondaga County is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in upstate NY with the Adirondack Mountains within easy driving distance. The laboratory is located in city of Syracuse, within a five-hour drive from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal.

Duties:

  • Casework to include processing physical evidence for the development of latent prints, comparison of latent prints to known prints (including automated database searches), taking notes and generating reports, testifying to findings in court; conducting/supervising research, method development and validation of new technical procedures; performing technical review of casework; and performing quality control and quality assurance related tasks.
  • The Senior Latent Print Examiner would have the additional responsibilities of technical oversight of the Latent Print Section including development and maintenance of methods, oversight of training, and supervision of Latent Print Section staff.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor's Degree or higher in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field and
  • At least 100 hours of forensic science internship experience in a crime laboratory or employment in a technical position in a Forensic Laboratory for six months within the last five years for the Latent Print Examiner I position or
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a latent print examiner for the Latent Print Examiner II position or
  • Five (5) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a latent print examiner for the Latent Print Examiner III position or
  • Six (6) years of full-time paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing work equivalent to a latent print examiner for the Senior Latent Print Examiner position.
  • NOTE: Education may be substituted for experience as follows: A Master's Degree or a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) in a natural science, forensic science, criminalistics or a closely related field can be substituted for one (1) year of the required work experience for the LPE III and Senior LPE position.
